Plant that earns, not just sits.
Excavators, loaders and generators don't have odometers or number plates, so utilisation is a guess and hire billing is an argument. JoTrack meters them by engine hours and puts a location on anything that stops coming back.
What actually goes wrong
Written from the questions this sector asks on the first call.
Today, without tracking
-
Utilisation is a guessNobody knows which machines earned their keep this month and which sat on a site doing nothing.
-
Plant hire is billed on trustHire days are counted by hand, so the invoice reflects the calendar rather than the work.
-
Unregistered kit is unrecoverableA generator with no plate and no tracker is gone the moment it leaves the gate.
With JoTrack
-
Hours, per machine, per siteEngine-hour meters show which assets are working and which are idle capital.
-
Billing that matches the workHire invoices rest on recorded running hours, not a diary entry.
-
Recovery for kit without platesBattery-backed units keep reporting off-grid, so theft is a location, not a write-off.
What engine hours are worth
A worked model with every assumption shown — not a customer result. Change the inputs to your own and the answer moves with them.
The assumptions
Assume 40 machines — excavators, loaders and generators — hired out at $200 a day across 250 working days. That is 10,000 machine-days a year, counted by hand from site diaries.
What metering exposes
Assume 12% of those days are wrong in some direction: a machine that never ran, a day nobody logged, an off-hire date argued after the fact. That is 1,200 machine-days a year resting on somebody’s memory.
The arithmetic
Recover a quarter of them — 300 days at $200 — and that is $60,000 a year, against a Professional plan covering all 40 machines at $180 a month, or $2,160 a year. The rest of the recovery is upside this model does not claim.
